In SYNTAX, various scale and hierarchy of social spaces were emerged, that enables natural interactions between residents. Agora, Pocket Lounge, and Pyeongsang each correspond with block, aggregation and unit scale. Also they match for the three agenda that our team had, 'Housing as shared infrastructure for community / Improving housing quality and privacy protection / Flexible housing system adapting to life changes'. 1. Agora Our team assumed a society where private ownership of real estate no longer exists. In such a context, residents need opportunities for self-discussion about their housing environment. The Agora is designed to accommodate these discussions as well as various forms of resident communication. The space is terraced with diverse level differences, and each levels functions as its own social platform.
[People in the Agora] The varied level changes of the agora accommodate people’s activities more effectively.
[Site Plan] Each level of the agora is assigned different materials—grass, brick pavement, water features, wood, and gravel. While preserving the structure of the existing buildings as much as possible, additional circulation paths were introduced to connect to the existing cores, allowing them to be integrated into the modular system. 2. Pocket Lounge At the building scale, the Pocket Lounge serves as a community space that residents can shape freely according to their own intentions. Equipped with folding doors, it can seamlessly expand into the studio of each unit. Or, it can combine with adjacent Pocket Lounges to create larger social spaces. By doing so, the corridor functions one step further than a circulation route itself and becomes a place of natural interaction.

As time passes and people’s life cycles change, the demand for housing space inevitably evolves. SYNTAX’s flexible aggregation system responds to these changing needs by allowing units to be freely combined in different ways, and decisions regarding such housing arrangements take place in the agora. This directly shows how agora and aggregation system can work together.
Even if units appear identical in form, actual unit layout can vary depending on how the interior walls are configured. This strongly demonstrates the scalability inherent in SYNTAX’s aggregation system.
Such free aggregation system is made possible by the project’s steel framework. To enable the free combination and separation of units, a structure that can function as a grid—rather than a conventional concrete system—is essential. This is where the balance between design and structure becomes evident.
Different materials such as translucent polycarbonate panel, glazing, drywalls and various types of openings can come up together and make collage in facade. This section drawing shows that the units can be combined vertically. Layers are made by inner partition and folding door of pocket lounge that also relates to my major concept, Layering. 3. Pyeongsang Each unit consists of a studio for alpha functions, a primary living space, a terrace, and a Pocket Lounge. The kitchen and bathroom walls act as spatial generators, defining the core boundaries of the unit. Additional layers—such as partitions and pocket doors—build upon this free-plan structure to create adaptable configurations. Pyeongsang is a shared space designed to respond to such fluid spatial conditions, taking on the role of the living room in a conventional LDK layout. However, depending on the user’s preferences, it can connect either to the studio or to the primary living space, with flexible spatial division as a defining characteristic.
This comparison of two scenes show that difference in type B. If people wants more independent style, they can add layers on it. The 450mm elevation shift enables natural spatial division even without the use of walls, seamlessly connecting the studio and the main living area, each with differing levels of publicness.
