In SYNTAX, the modular system of X-Housing is maintained, while mass fragmentation is introduced to increase each residential unit’s contact with the exterior.
According to the form of fragmentation, various type of social spaces are designed and different pavements are allocated to it. Social programs, such as gym, nurturing center, cafe and library are located at facility bars and work as social spaces too. Existing building is also included in the modular system, functioning as a library in the plan.
In the aggregation, I designed pocket lounge to activate natural interaction between residents and make space that can express own personality. Through pocket lounge, the scene of corridor become more diverse and function of corridor can extend from circulation to communication. The logic of 'circulation + social space' is maintained in every clusters that can be made infinitely.
Each living units include studio, terrace and pocket lounge, and the size of them differs to the unit type. Basic unit named as Type A and Type B can be combined to form bigger units. To ensure the even quality of living (based on team scenario), number of people living in each units is fixed.
The residential units are based on a free-plan concept, allowing spaces to be divided or combined according to residents' intentions. The generators of these spatial configurations are the W.C. and the kitchen. 'Pyeongsang' is a shared space designed to respond to such fluid spatial conditions, taking on the role of the living room in a conventional LDK layout. However, depending on the user’s preferences, it can connect either to the studio or to the primary living space, with flexible spatial division as a defining characteristic.
