From Accidental Void to a place of Intentional Experience 세운상가 지하에 남겨진 조선전기 3–5호 건물지는, 위로만 확장되어 온 도시의 구조와 달리 아래로 내려갈 때 비로소 드러나는 시간의 층위를 품고 있다. 파편화된 구조와 재료의 흔적은 과거의 질서가 여전히 현재 속에 잔존함을 보여주며, 하부 공간이 지닌 깊이를 조용히 드러낸다. 소음과 흐름이 지배하는 지상과 달리 지하는 축적된 시간과 마주할 수 있는 느린 공간이 된다. 이러한 층위의 재독해는 보존을 넘어, 역사적 기반 위에 새로운 경험을 쌓아가는 과정이다. 우리는 이 하부의 자리를 도시 아래에서 머무르고 사유할 수 있는 사색의 공간으로 전환하고자 한다. Beneath the Sewoon Sangga complex, the remains of Buildings No. 3–5 from the early Joseon period contain layers of time that are revealed only by descending downward—unlike the city above, which has expanded solely upward. The fragmented structures and traces of materials testify that past orders still persist within the present, quietly exposing the depth inherent in subterranean space. In contrast to the ground level, dominated by noise and constant movement, the underground becomes a slow space where one can confront accumulated time. This rereading of stratification goes beyond preservation; it is a process of building new experiences upon a historical foundation. We seek to transform this lower realm into a contemplative space beneath the city—a place to dwell and to reflect.
