The Network reimagines a historic building in Seoul as a dynamic platform for dialogue, adaptive reuse, and sustainability—where the architecture itself becomes an active participant in the exhibition. At the heart of the project lies the concept of absence: a “dialogue of the missing.” Through mapping of broken connections, blocked sightlines, underused spaces, and the building’s visual and social isolation, these absences are transformed from voids into catalysts for reconnection. A key intervention restores the building’s lost axis of symmetry by selectively removing portions of the façade, leaving the concrete frame exposed and inviting movement through the site. A lightweight, transparent structure frames the historic core, complementing rather than overshadowing it, and establishing a dialogue between past and present. Programmatically, The Network bridges Seoul’s architectural institutions and the public, translating theory into community-driven action. Layered, interconnected spaces—including a café, seminar rooms, and outdoor areas—encourage spontaneous encounters and blur boundaries between inside and outside, public and private. Sustainability is integral: adaptive reuse maximizes the existing structure, recycled materials are employed throughout, and a double-skin façade with movable panels adapts to the seasons. Green roofs and local materials further reduce environmental impact, while the new structure doubles as an outdoor exhibition platform. Ultimately, The Network is a place where history and innovation meet—reconnecting people, place, and ideas, and transforming absence into a powerful tool for architectural and social renewal.
