The title of our team project is called “Woven Town”. We predict by 2050, due to the creation of multiple open spaces and the Imun-hwigyeong New Town that is built below our site, our site will be surrounded by many apartment complexes, transforming the surrounding area into a small new city. There is also a plan to move the current Gyeongwon line and Imun Train Depot underground, creating a new multiplex building on top. The redevelopment of the Imun Train Depot, into mainly commercial use with the presence of outdoor activities, affects us as it is located towards the east of our site. We predict that the perpendicular road connecting the train depot to our site will become more commercialised as it allows for easier access and allows more outsiders to visit the area. Moreover, the road would connect the Uireung to the Jungnangcheon park, creating a seamless visual connection towards our site. Some commonings that we have identified are the accessibility of the site, the temporal privatisation of public space by residents, the webbing of the streets, the availability of the public space (Uireung) and the expansion tendency of shopowners. As a team, we have decided to follow six steps in our design strategy. Firstly, we would construct the "island" as it would house the elderly who have been displaced in other areas. We would then demolish the 1-storey or 2-storey buildings, in order to replace them with a building with a higher FAR while keeping 50% of the overall FAR. This is followed by the creation of the diagonal green corridor that connects the train depot to the park and thus, repurposing the inner roads to be more pedestrian-friendly. Lastly, we would create open spaces with each of the 5 sites and maintain the current alleys that would connect the open spaces to the main green corridor. Our second urban strategy would be the add-on system, whereby we would use heavy materials on the bottom of the structure while using lighter materials on top, suggesting the idea of continuous expansion of the building.
