Situated in one of Cheongnyangni's oldest building clusters, 'Elderly House' seeks to combine the programs of an outpatient treatment center, a nursing/silver home and social work training center (under UOS). This unique blend of programs will help the building to be more financially sustainable and resilient, due to the constant provision of medical and social welfare staff from the university's School of Social Welfare. The key idea of this project is to buy over the current approximately 18x 50-100 year old single-storey houses and, instead of full demolition, preserve the nostalgia and historic value of the premises by repurposing the current exterior walls as the walls of the new, larger social complex. Not only does the building fulfil its function; architecturally, visitors perceive the social welfare building as a village from the outside, but the experience of a series of "rooms" on the inside entices the inhabitants to reconsider that view. The interior forms it's own logic, contrary to the external original walls, and a series of open courtyards guides the visitor through the building.
