I wanted to form a library about Truth of Universe which is divided into two types of information. I divided it into scientific facts that everyone knows, and secrets that are unknown to the public. As there were two types of programs, the users were also divided. The Non-secret Library, which deals with scientific facts, is open to anyone, but the Secret Library is made available only to authorized people. My concept is to create two different but one libraries, which are divided into the types of information and the types of users accordingly.
The library is located in Jungnim-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, and you can see from the site plan. If you look at the analysis of the site, the circulation is formed along the axis. And it is meet to Seoullo which is an elevated walkway. I took advantage of these points to deploy the building. I considered the view from Seoullo and Mallidong square. The non-secret space, wide knowledge information library, was slightly rotated to the angle of the view in Seoul and Malli-dong square, allowing both sides of the building to be seen from outside
Separating the two libraries started from the constructing the circulation. The space was separated by placing the two spiral shaped-circulation so that each space did not meet each other. One, expressed in red, is the circulation of non-secret library. And the other, expressed in blue, is for the secret library.
This circulation concept came from a previous concept model. I was interested in creating spaces as two circulation lines crossed, so I wanted to apply them to the library. The section of such a concept model, especially second one, becomes an important element of library design later.
Arrangements of programs were made along the circulations of two spaces. The information of the universe was arranged in chronological order, followed by a visual display program to enable visual experience. Then, when you reach the top floor, the last stage of your trip, the program will end with a media room. Although it seems a space for similar purposes, the types of information covered are intended to be completely different.
Floor placement was alternately arranged in sections to contain these circulations and programs. The thickness and shape of floor and stair are different so that the two spaces are different from each other in the drawing. In particular, if you look at the section of the Secret Library, you can see that the cross-sectional elements of the concept model have been interpreted as spaces. It used curves and steps, which formed a circulation spaces and curved walls, which is the most special arrangement in the secret library.
The process of a plane is no different from a section. The shape of the two mass and the width of the stairs were different to show the difference. First of all, if you look at the entrance in the plan, The non-secret library has an entry on 1st floor and the secret library circulation entering from the back has an entry on the second floor to overcome the East-West topographical difference.
This image shows the blockage of the space. Different levels of each slab are placed so that it is physically distinguished, as well as blocking in the field of vision. In the case of the non-secret library, which is open to everyone, you can also see it in the secret library as shown in the diagram above. However, The secret library, which only qualified persons can enter, is not as easily seen as image above.
there is fire egress in the middle of the two spaces. The two libraries have different levels but can be evacuated on one step. It also serves as an anchor for each space. The slope in line with the Universal Design regulations was actively utilized and two cores were used to allow the disabled to experience all the space.
façade surrounding these spaces/ To distinguish the two spaces in elevations, such as the composition of sections or planes, I want to contrast the opening. A long window was created along the floor of the secret building and the non-secret library accept the flow of the line by using the concrete line as the outer wall. Several lines that start off along the floor line of Secret Library are uninterruptedly wrapped around the building, which is a window when they reach the secret library and a concrete wall when they reach the non-secret library.
The composition of the floor and the way it was supported were distinguished from the two buildings. The Non-Secret Library has the Reinfored Concrete Slab and steel coloums support them. However, the Secret Library has the Two-Way Concrete Waffle Slab and walls which is in the building support them. It can be thought of as a long column to function as an inner wall from the inside. There are three cores, two elevators on both sides and a fire egress in the middle, supporting the building in the middle of the building and acting as an anchor connecting the two libraries.
The two spaces are clearly divided into circulation, program, section, and plan, but light is also a factor that separates these two spaces. The non-secret has many openings, and the secret space does not have many openings to give light contrast. So the contrast effect of light occurs in two spaces.
