The main idea driving this exercise is that sites must be actively constructed. ‘Site’ and ‘context’ are not given or fixed. They need to be constantly defined. They are not just the passive background or scenery of the architectural proposal, but robust active and generative foundations that need to be read and translated to frame any design intervention. They also may shift over time.
The goal of this first task is twofold:
• To learn about the existing building and its context (in teams).
• To assess the values of the building/site in order to frame the direction of design interventions (individually).
