1. Site Analysis The line with the building's site was found to be significantly less accessible to the public than the other streets with restaurant&cafes due to the large number of galleries and dwellings. The south side of the site is also an area of major roads and office buildings, and accessibility is even lower except for the underground floor and the first floor. On the contrary, there are two open spaces on the east and west side of the site.
Looking at this, I got the impression that there was a shield between the open spaces, and I saw it as an opportunity to remove it and connect the space. In this way, the site will resolve some kind of barrier between Seochon, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon, and Insa-dong. If it ends in a spatial connection, it would be just better to make a road, and I could make a square by expanding the travel route. But I had to think about what library I could build on the site. There are many small libraries around the site, and there is big size library near there. I wanted my library to have a different characteristic than them. I thought that it could be a library where various interactions occur rather than a library where each one exists.
2. Library Concept My building will be a space like a stage with a screen where various things happen. It also means removing the curtains between the spaces and removing the veil that exists between people.
3. About Mass & Programs - Mass According to the previous concept, the road between Songhyeon and Gyeongbokgung Palace and across sites a and b must be able to travel smoothly. So, we conducted mass study based on this. The outer skin of the overlapping part of the walking path was separated as if walking through a screen in an existing building, and there was no original mass on one part of the other land, so a new mass without bricks was created. - Curtain After that, I thought that it would be nice to be able to feel the curtain, which is the starting concept, spatially. So, curtains were formed along the road axis, and I hoped that people would naturally feel a sense of space as they passed by. It became a space between a complete indoor and outdoor space, and it was thought that relationships could be connected or disconnected from time to time like curtains. - Programs They have different characteristics, and I arranged the library program accordingly. Small spaces are frequently visited, but the upper floors are more closed than other spaces. So, an office space is located on the first floor and a small bookstore, where tourists are the main target. The main space is the largest and the best space for exchanges. The main event space and the main library are located. Secret Space is a space for contemplation, where programs such as quiet study spaces or book cafes are located. The open space is not large, but small programs exist in places with high variability. There is a maker space, so various people can come and go for creation, and it is a space where the outputs of various programs are open to the people. It was hoped that exchanges would take place not only in the square but also through the book lounge, a place where knowledge exchanges.
This is the sketch that shows various situations that can happen in my building.
5. About Materials (Adaptive Reuse Strategy) First of all, it will leave a brick. Black front bricks are a good material for showing the quiet attitude of PAB buildings. Since there is a big protagonist named Gyeongbokgung Palace in front of him, many surrounding buildings are wearing clothes that do not reveal their presence much. When viewed from Gyeongbokgung Palace, the existing building seems to hide its appearance by overlapping the black roof tiles of the fence. Likewise, my library will respect historical places. There was no reason to not respect and stand out in the facade on the side of Gyeongbokgung Palace. However, the story is different in the facade on the Songhyeon-dong side. There will be an open and people-interacting library here. Originally, the open Songhyeon Square was an out-of-access space, and accordingly, the architect expressed the convenient facade monotonously. Now, the situation has changed. Everyone is approaching, and it is open everywhere. As a result, a plain face was revealed, and the appearance cannot attract people at all. Therefore, I decided to take a different strategy from Songhyeon Square. I hope it is not too heavy and can get people's curiosity. In conclusion, my building will have an open appearance while respecting the past.
